ACH Security Breach

Canandaigua National Bank & Trust has received notification of a recent security breach using the ACH Network. We would like to take this opportunity to remind you of some security procedures that you can implement to assist in protecting your accounts from such an occurrence.

As an ACH Originating organization, you have a critical role to play in managing these types of risks. Part of that role includes fulfilling on your due diligence as an ACH Network Participant. Please review the following.

ACH Network Participant Due Diligence
Configure your computers to automatically log out after a specified period of non-use.
Install and subscribe to a security software suite to protect your network and computers from existing threats. Two leading companies offering this type of software are Symantec and McAfee

a. Use anti-virus software to prevent malicious code from entering your system.
b. Use anti-spyware software to avoid compromise of confidential information.
c. Use firewall and intrusion detection software to prevent unauthorized network access.
d. Use filtering software to reduce the incidence of “spam” in your e-mail inbox. Ensure all CNB online banking users have a unique login user-ID. Change passwords regularly.
Monitor your account balances daily for unexpected activity. Notify us if this occurs. Know your customers: Category of business; Transaction type (Payroll deposit, club dues, etc.).
Transactions derived from illegal internet gambling are strictly prohibited and may not be included in any authorized transactions.

Security Tips for Online Banking & ACH

  • Do not write down or share your password or security questions and answers with anyone.
  • Create a strong password including a mix of both alpha and numeric characters.
  • Avoid the use of password managers.
  • Consider dual control for ACH transactions.
  • Remember to sign off of online banking if you leave your computer. Use the sign off icon to end your session.
  • Watch for changes to login pages where your credentials are entered.
